PROGRAMS: TALK

The Diane Rehm Show  (10a.m. – Noon Weekdays)
The Diane Rehm Show has for over 25 years offered listeners the opportunity to hear and participate in a thoughtful and lively dialogue on an enormous array of topics with many of the most interesting people of our times. Diane Rehm is a native Washingtonian who began her radio career in 1973 as an assistant producer for talk shows at WAMU. For three years in a row, from 1992-1994, The Diane Rehm Show won
Washington's Achievement in Radio Award for Best In-Depth Interview. Additionally, readers of Washingtonian magazine have twice voted Diane Rehm one of the best talk show hosts in the Washington area. The program, described by Newsweek as one of the most interesting talk programs in the country, features in-depth interviews and listener call-ins on a variety of cultural and political topics.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross (1 – 2p.m. Weekdays)
A Peabody Award-winning weekday magazine of contemporary arts and issues, Fresh Air with Terry Gross is one of public radio's most popular programs. The one-hour program features in-depth interviews with prominent cultural and entertainment figures, as well as distinguished experts on current affairs and news. Fresh Air's interviews are in a category by themselves, distinguished by host and executive producer Terry Gross' unique approach. "A remarkable blend of empathy and warmth, genuine curiosity and sharp intelligence," says The San Francisco Chronicle. Fresh Air is known for its nationally recognized critics and commentators. At first, the show originally centered almost exclusively on interviews with popular cultural and entertainment figures such as Tony Bennett, David Mamet, Stephen Sondheim and Nicholas Cage. But Fresh Air has added to its guest list people who can provide perspectives clarifying almost any topic in the news. "If you want to understand a political conflict, it helps to understand the culture in which that conflict is taking place," Gross says. "When there is a crisis in a foreign country, we sometimes call up that country's leading novelist or filmmaker to get that cultural perspective."

Talk of the Nation  (2 - 4p.m. Monday-Thursday)
Talk of the Nation is widely recognized in the national press as a groundbreaking talk program, having won the prestigious 1993/94 Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award as part of NPR's coverage of South African elections. Following the terrorist attacks on
September 11th, 2001, NPR's veteran military reporter Neal Conan was tapped to anchor special breaking coverage of the world situation. Neal brings that expertise and more to his current role as permanent host of Talk of the Nation. Politcal and intellectual leaders of all sorts make up the daily round of guests. Sharp, incisive questions come from the host and from callers across the country.
