International fireworks competition being launched in Cincinnati

Fireworks will light up the night sky over Coney Island Saturday in the nation's first-ever "Fire Up The Night." 


The event will pit fireworks teams from the U.S., Canada and Mexico against each other in a pyrotechnic extravaganza.  It's being sponsored by Cincinnati-based fireworks legend Rozzi's Famous Fireworks.


Alonzo Fireworks from  New York, Sirius Pyrotechnics from Quebec and Lux Pirotecnia from Mexico City  will be competing for international bragging rights.


Rozzi's will put on a show after the competition.

Latest on Washington Park rules dispute

The Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition is claiming victory over what it called "special signs" erected at Washington Park in Over-the-Rhine. Three people living near the park filed suit September 4th.  Coalition Executive Director Josh Spring says the Cincinnati Park Board voted today to strike down Park Rule 28, which he says allowed the board to post a sign in any park with any special rules that would be enforced like law.

Baby on board

The sign says it all.   

You've got to look really closely, but it is amazing to see this tiny sifaka (SEE-fah-kah) clinging to its mother's chest.  The baby boy weighed just slightly more than three ounces when it was born September 3 to mother Wilhelmina and father Rinaldo at the Cincinnati Zoo.

The baby, which hasn't been named yet, will continue to cling to the front of its mother for the first few weeks, and eventually move onto her back for the next six months.  It'll take a year for it to reach full maturity.

CPS adopts new teacher evaluation policy

Cincinnati Public School teachers will be seeing a new system for evaluating their job performance.  The board of education has adopted new state requirements that are based half on teacher performance.  Superintendent Mary Ronan says the other half is based on several measures of student growth.

City launches design competition to "Connect the Blocks"

The City of Cincinnati is holding a national competition to get design ideas for the decks over Fort Washington Way that will connect the Central Business District to the Banks. 

The competition is called "Connect the Blocks."  The city will conduct a call for entries from design, architectural and engineering experts to create concepts and cost estimates.  The space could be used as a park, commercial development or entertainment district, but isn't limited to those uses.
