Cincinnati area hospitals see rise in uncompensated care

Local hospitals are seeing an upward trend in the number of people who need care, but are unable to pay for it. A new survey by the Greater Cincinnati Health Council shows they provided $276 million in uncompensated care last year--a 15 percent increase from 2007. Council president Colleen O'Toole says the increase is, in part, because of the tough economy with more people who are uninsured and an increase in those who are employed and have insurance, but still face hospital costs beyond their means, including co-pays and deductibles. The survey looked at uncompensated care provided by 26 Cincinnati area hospitals. O'Toole says last year's 15 percent increase is on top of a 19 percent rise in 2007. She says the steep increases in free care are indicators the current health care system is broken and needs significant reform. Health Council data show about half the Tristate's acute care hospitals reported operating losses last year.
