Cincinnati's Police Chief says the officers who shot and killed a St. Bernard man Tuesday were justified in doing so, because he threatened their lives.
Streicher: You can't look at it tomorrow morning, sitting comfortably behind a desk, and say I don't think I would have done that. You've got to look at it from the perspective of a police officer who's involved.
During a news conference Wednesday morning Chief Tom Streicher recounted the rapidly evolving situation in Winton Place in which the victim, 27 year old Randolph Ward, was pulled over for a traffic stop. He had warrants for his arrest, and he had a gun. Ward took off running, and Streicher says two different times officers decided not to fire at him. But when he began shooting at them they had no choice. Captain Michael Cureton visited Ward's mother and says her grief was very evident.
Cureton: She recounted his childhood, his teenage years, and his most recent weeks and months, and how difficult those times had been for him and for her. And that she did all she could as a mother to sort of prevent this kind of incident from occuring.
Police say the family has money problems and may not be able to afford a burial for their son. The City is taking donations.
