It’s an off year election, but there are still lots of candidates and issues on today’s ballots. In Cincinnati, residents will be deciding whether to re-elect Mayor Mark Mallory or to give that job to Republican Brad Wenstrup. There are 19 candidates running to be on City Council. Eight of them are incumbents. Vice Mayor David Crowley is not on the ballot because of term limits. There are also 2 citywide charter amendments to decide on. The first would require residents to vote on a plan for the city to set-up a water district and the other would let voters decide before the city spends any money on passenger rail in the future. City residents are also being asked to renew a levy for the Cincinnati Public Schools. In Hamilton County, voters will be deciding levies for the family health, hospitalization services and treatment programs, mental retardation and developmental disabilities, Union Terminal and the Public Libraries of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Meanwhile, in Dayton residents there are voting for the city’s mayor and on a tax levy for the Dayton Library. There are 3 statewide issues for voters to consider. The one that’s been getting the most attention and the majority of the advertising is Issue 3. It would allow private developers to build 4 casinos in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland and Toledo. Issue 1 would let the state borrow money to pay bonuses to veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Issue 2 would create a livestock care standards board. Voters in Butler County have a number of races including Fairfield and Hamilton mayors, the Fairfield Board of Education and West Chester trustees. Races for Batavia and Amelia council highlight the Clermont County ballot and in Warren County voters are deciding levies for the health district and the Career Center. You have until 7:30 this evening to cast your ballot. WVXU will have coverage of the results beginning this evening at 9:00.
