Sharonville breaks ground on convention center expansion

Expanding the Sharonville Convention Center means expanding the region's economy. That's how local officials touted the project as they broke ground on it today. Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune says the expanded center will create new opportunities by filling hotel rooms, putting people in restaurants and keeping people gainfully employed. The facility will more than double in size as it adds 36,000 square feet. Hamilton County Commission President David Pepper says there's an incredible demand for places to meet and hold conventions. That's why he says it's one of the best growth strategies for the county to build on that demand and create this area as a destination. The expansion of the Sharonville Convention Center is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2011. Mayor Virgil Lovitt says the county is providing $1.3 million annually and Sharonville $1 million annually for 30 years to pay for the project. He says all the funding is coming from the county's hotel room tax. That's the same tax that was used to expand the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati.
