What is HD Radio?
Since March 2005 WMUB has been transmitting with the latest in radio technology, HD Radio. HD Radio allows stations to add one or more digital signals in near-CD quality in addition to the existing analog FM. HD Radio requires a special receiver, which can also pick up regular analog FM signals. Listeners with HD radios within range of the Oxford area can hear three WMUB channels in HD:
- 88.5-HD1: simulcast of our main analog FM channel in HD
- 88.5-HD2: our Jazz Channel, which as of August 4th will include Mama Jazz from 8pm-midnight
- 88.5-HD3: our 24-hour BBC World Service Channel
Will I be able to hear WMUB's HD signal?
Unfortunately, at this time the HD signal does not carry as far as our analog FM. So not every listener to our analog signal will be able to pick up WMUB’s HD signal. Broadcasters are working with the FCC to address that issue, but for now we suggest that listeners too far from the transmitter use the web to listen to HD1-Main, HD2-Jazz, and (soon) HD3-BBC.
Those who are most likely to get a strong digital signal will be listeners in Oxford and Northwestern Butler County, in Preble County and Southwestern Montgomery County as well as Union County, Indiana and portions of Wayne, Franklin and Fayette Counties. How can I get an HD Radio?
The cost of an HD radio is steadily dropping, and new models are coming on line every day. HD radios are available as tabletop models, home stereo components, and car stereos.
Right now (through September 30, 2008) is a good time to get int HD Radio. Several manufacturers are offering $50 rebates on their models.

One that we can recommend for general use is the Radio*sophy HD100, pictured here. After the rebate, the cost is $49.95 + shipping. You must order from Radio*sophy. Other models are available from several manufacturers. Some area electronics stores such as Radio Shack and Best Buy have a limited number in stock, or can special order HD radios.
How does HD Radio work?
For the technically-curious, the system is known as “In Band, On Channel” (IBOC,) meaning that the digital signals are sent along with the standard FM signals within previously-assigned channels on which we have been operating.
Since WMUB operates with a directional FM signal, protecting adjacent channels in the Cincinnati area, most of our signal in both the analog and digital mode, is sent toward Indiana and the Dayton area.
You can find out more about HD Radio at the iBiquity site (iBiquity is the only FCC-licensed developer of HD Radio technology).
